It's time for a fresh start!
I think we're all a little bit excited to start 2021 with some positivity. Goal setting when it comes to our health and wellness can help to ground us, remind us of what we want for our lives and keep focused on what's important.
By becoming crystal clear on a few key goals, you'll be able to:
- Cultivate new behaviours
- Guide your focus and sustain momentum
- Measure Progress
- Overcome Procrastination
- Stay Motivated
The most important step, of course, is the first one. Discovering what your goals are! Spend some quiet time alone and think about the different areas of your life from a health and wellness perspective.
Are you feeling well rested?
Are you enjoying a well-balanced diet?
Do you feel strong?
Are you dealing with specific health concerns?
How is your mental health?
Are you prioritising self-care?
Questions like these will help you gain some clarity and allow you to set SMART goals for yourself.
S: Specific
Making your goal as specific as possible means there can be no ambiguity. Try creating a statement for your goal, like "I want to increase my flexibility by practising yoga 4 times per week and stretching every day."
M: Measurable
Creating methods of tracking your progress will help to keep you motivated and increase your chances of achieving your goals significantly. If your goal is to drink more water, then keeping a log of how many litres you are drinking will really help to achieve this. An app, hydration journal or a water bottle with visual increments will work like a charm.
A: Achievable
It's important to set achievable goals so that you don't set yourself up for failure.Your goals should be a challenge, but not so big that you get overwhelmed and demoralised. Try to break your goals down to smaller steps with attainable actions.
R: Relevant
Your goals should be meaningful to you. It's about identifying what's important to you and not anybody else. If your goal is about pleasing others, or what you think you 'should' do, chances are you won't stick with it for very long.
T: Time
Set yourself a clear timeline of how you will go about achieving the steps to your goal. eg. If your goal is to incorporate more self-care practises into your life in order to feel less stressed, you could start with " Every Monday morning I will meditate for 20 minutes ". Next, choose a date when you will either achieve your goal or a date where you will check-in with your progress. Make sure it's not too far into the future, but also be sure to give yourself enough time to achieve it too.
